Motorcycle clutch replacement typically costs $400 to $1,200 or more. A basic friction-plate replacement on a bike with an easy-access clutch cover sits near $400 to $700, while heavier bikes, hydraulic systems, a worn basket or hub and cases that need extra disassembly can run $900 to $1,200 or higher. These are typical U.S. ranges as of 2026 and vary by bike, region and shop.
Most of the cost is labor. A clutch job often means draining oil, removing the cover and sometimes the exhaust or brake pedal, so the parts list is short but the hours are long.
How much does motorcycle clutch replacement cost?
A rough breakdown by job type.
| Job | Parts | Labor | Typical total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cable adjustment or replacement | $15 to $50 | $30 to $100 | $50 to $150 |
| Clutch fluid and hydraulic bleed | $10 to $30 | $60 to $120 | $70 to $150 |
| Friction plates only | $80 to $250 | $250 to $450 | $400 to $700 |
| Friction plates, steel plates and springs | $150 to $400 | $300 to $550 | $450 to $900 |
| Full kit with basket or hub replacement | $350 to $900 | $350 to $650 | $700 to $1,200+ |
| Slave cylinder or master cylinder rebuild or replacement | $50 to $300 | $100 to $250 | $150 to $550 |
Only the plate and basket jobs reach the $400 to $1,200+ headline range. The cable and hydraulic work in the first rows is the cheap stuff to rule out first. Our overview of motorcycle repair costs by job shows where this sits against other repairs.
What affects the cost
Bike type and clutch design
Wet multi-plate clutches, common on most bikes, sit in the engine oil and require draining it and opening the cover. Dry clutches, such as on some Ducati and BMW models, have different parts and procedures. Some touring and shaft-drive bikes need the transmission or rear drive separated to get at the clutch. Big twin cruisers may require removing primary-drive components. Details vary by model.
Parts
Typical parts costs:
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Friction plate set | $60 to $250 |
| Steel plates (set) | $40 to $180 |
| Clutch springs | $15 to $80 |
| Pressure plate | $50 to $250 |
| Clutch basket | $150 to $600+ |
| Clutch hub (inner) | $100 to $400 |
| Cover gasket and oil | $20 to $80 |
| Bearings and throwout parts | $20 to $120 |
Our clutch plates guide explains the parts, and the OEM vs aftermarket choice matters here, since heavy-duty kits cost more. See OEM vs aftermarket motorcycle parts before you pick.
Condition of the basket and hub
If grooves are worn into the basket fingers or inner hub, plates can snag and the clutch will not release cleanly. A shop may recommend replacing the basket, which can double the parts cost. Ask to see the worn parts.
Why the clutch wore out
A clutch that is slipping because of wear is one thing. One that slipped because of oil contamination, a bad adjustment, a weak spring or heavy modifications is another. Fixing the cause matters, or a new clutch may fail again. Our clutch slipping guide lists symptoms and causes.
Labor and shop type
The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists transmission work among the duties of a motorcycle mechanic, and a clutch job is among the longer ones. Expect 3 to 6 hours of labor on many bikes and more on difficult ones. Dealers cost more per hour but know the model. Our labor rate guide explains flat-rate and hourly billing.
Extras done at the same time
Because the cover is off, shops often recommend new oil and filter, a new cover gasket and a check of the clutch cable, lever and hydraulic parts. Those add $60 to $200. See our oil change cost guide for the oil part.
Do you need a new clutch or just an adjustment?
Rule out the cheap fixes first:
- Cable with no free play, which keeps the clutch from fully engaging
- Dry, frayed or sticking cables
- Low or old clutch fluid on hydraulic systems
- Wrong oil, such as a friction-modified oil that makes a wet clutch slip
- Worn or broken clutch lever or perch
Our guide on adjusting a motorcycle clutch cable covers the easy one. If the bike still slips under load, drags or will not shift cleanly, plates and springs are the next suspects. Do not guess. A shop can check for slip, drag and fluid condition. If it will not shift at all, see motorcycle won't shift into gear.
DIY clutch replacement cost
Parts range from about $80 for plates to $900 for a full kit. You also need a torque wrench, a clutch holding tool or equivalent, gasket scraper, the service manual and new oil. It is a manageable job on many simple bikes and a difficult one on others. Mistakes with torque, alignment or assembly order can damage the engine. If you have not done it before and the bike is complex, consider paying for the labor.
How to get a fair written estimate
- Describe the symptom exactly. Slipping under load, hard to disengage, noisy or a grabby lever lead to different fixes.
- Ask the shop to rule out cable, fluid and adjustment first. These are cheap checks.
- Get an itemized quote. The FTC advises that a written estimate should identify the condition to be repaired, the parts needed and the anticipated labor charge, and should say the shop will contact you for approval before exceeding a set amount of time or money.
- Ask which parts are included. Friction plates, steels, springs, gasket, oil, and whether the basket or hub is assessed.
- Ask about the approval process. If the basket turns out to be worn, they should call before proceeding.
- Ask for the old parts. The FTC suggests asking for replaced parts so you can see the wear.
- Get a second opinion on a $900+ quote.

Ways to reduce the cost
- Fix cable, fluid or adjustment issues before assuming plates are bad
- Bundle with other work needing the same oil drain, such as an oil change
- Use a good-quality kit instead of the cheapest or the most extreme racing clutch
- Ease up on hard launches and clutch slipping in traffic
- Use the oil your manual specifies, since the wrong type can make a wet clutch slip
For older machines, weigh the price against the bike's value with our is it worth repairing an old motorcycle framework.
When to see a mechanic
Get the bike inspected if:
- The engine revs up but the bike does not accelerate in proportion
- The clutch lever is hard, soft, spongy or has no free play
- The bike creeps in neutral or lurches when you pull the lever
- There is a burning smell, rattle or metal in the oil
- The bike will not shift cleanly
- Oil is leaking from the clutch cover
A clutch that fails in traffic can leave you without drive at a bad time. Stop riding if it will not engage or will not release. For a shop with engine and transmission experience, see our engine rebuild services page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to replace all the clutch plates?
Usually the friction plates are replaced as a set, and the steel plates and springs are checked and replaced if worn or warped. Mixing new and old friction plates tends to give an uneven engagement.
Is it cheaper to replace just the clutch cable?
Yes, a cable or an adjustment is cheap compared with plates. If the clutch lever feels wrong, rule out the cable and adjustment first before paying for a clutch.
How long does a motorcycle clutch last?
It depends on the bike, riding style and clutch design. Many last tens of thousands of miles with normal riding, but hard launches, towing and stop-and-go riding wear them faster.
Can I ride with a slipping clutch?
Only briefly and with care. A slipping clutch overheats, wears faster and can leave you without power when you need it, so get it checked soon.
